A mixed alcohol product containing little or no methanol can be produced from synthesis gas by a process incorporating the synthesis of alcohols over a catalyst, the fractionation of the product to yield a desired mixed alcohol product and a fraction containing methanol, and recycling the methanol fraction to the synthesis reaction. Further production of methanol is inhibited. The product is suitable for blending with gasoline as an octane improver. |
