Hydraulic shock absorber

Hitherto known shock absorbers for motor vehicles in the initial phase amplify the shock and the body oscillation when running over uneven ground. A new damping law is intended to remedy this defect. The shock absorber piston acts on a free piston by way of a tension and compression spring, the spring force of which actuates a double-acting pressure valve in the shock absorber piston. The double-acting pressure valve results in a linear behaviour of the damper force in response to the spring deflection from the middle position. Due to the double-acting non-return valve, connected parallel to the double-acting pressure valve, the damping is operative only in rebound into the middle position. In all motor vehicles the new shock absorber permits a distinct minimising of the oscillation amplitudes and the number of oscillations of the vehicle mass for the same suspension parameters.
