The invention relates to a sheet separator for a backstitch brochure flow path. The aim of the invention is to improve the sheet separation in such a way that the requirement of suction air is reduced, reliable separation and transfer of the bottom sheet from the pile is implemented, and the mechanism according to the invention can be used without great expenditure in sheet separators which are already in use. The invention is based on the object of providing a suction mechanism for sheet separators, with which the separation of the sheets from the sheet pile and the transfer of the sheets to a downstream transporting device are to be improved by a novel movement sequence of the sucker. According to the invention, the object is achieved in that the sucker is arranged so as to be movable on an approximately circular path about the sheet pivoting point E between two catch points of its coupling curve R1 to the sheet transfer and R2 to the sheet delivery and, by means of an additional coupler, the suction plane is disposed at a right angle to the coupling curve, the sucker being pivotable in such a way that, after the separated sheet has been picked up by a downstream transporting device, said sucker exposes the space required for the rolling-off operation on the coupling curve from catch point R2 to R1.
