In a known image recording device, in which an ink ribbon can be moved past a recording head between an unwinding reel and a take-up reel, together with a recording medium to be printed, by means of a roller platen which is axially parallel to the winding reels, the take-up reel is connected via a friction clutch to a motor which drives it, whereas a friction brake acts on the unwinding reel. In order to achieve, with means which are as simple as possible, a tensile force in the ink ribbon (7), which tensile force is largely independent of the coil diameters of the winding reels (8, 9) which vary in the course of image recording, the friction surfaces of the friction clutch (15) and of the friction brake (14) are loaded in each case by the force of weight of the take-up reel (9) and of the unwinding wheel (8), respectively. <IMAGE>
