A machine tool, esp. a jig saw, consists of a C-shaped supporting frame (1-3) with two fixing members (22,39) for the vertical saw blade (31). The blade fixings are connected to the two ends of a metal band (45) which passes through the inside of the supporting frame around pulleys (46-50). One pulley (47) can be adjusted by a cam to control the tension of the band. The saw blade is reciprocated vertically by a cam mechanism driven by a belt from a pulley (8) on the end of the motor (5) drive shaft.
