PURPOSE:To increase cycle life by containing a specific amount of nickel hydroxide or nickel oxide in a negative plate having an active material comprising cadmium oxide and/or cadmium hydroxide and a specific amount of metallic cadmium. CONSTITUTION:A negative plate having an active material comprising cadmium oxide and/or cadmium hydroxide and metallic cadmium contains 15wt.% or more metallic cadmium based on the total amount of cadmium and 5-60wt.% nickel hydroxide and/or nickel oxide based on the total amount of cadmium. For example, in a cadmium negative plate containing 15wt.% or more metallic cadmium prepared by an electrochemical substitution method, the evolution of hydrogen gas starts when about 92-96% of the active material is charged. By using the metallic cadmium together with nickel hydroxide powder or nickel oxide powder, charging efficiency is further increased. Charge-discharge cycle life is increased. |
