An optical fiber 1 comprising a doped silica core and a silica cladding is fitted with a first coating of epoxy acrylate resin 2 and a second coating 3 for protecting the epoxy acrylate resin. The second coating 3 is constituted by a film of silicone 3 which is cured by the application of ultraviolet radiation, as is the epoxy acrylate resin 2, and whereby the fiber 1 is also fitted with a third coating constituted by a film 4 made of a plastic material having a traction strength not less than 160N/ mm<2>, an impact strength not less than 36N/mm and withstanding temperatures of at least -55 DEG C to + 50C, e.g. polyetherimide, said film surrounding the silicone coating 3. <IMAGE>
