The tensioning device (1) has a body member with two cable link chain cable between the holding devices. One of the cable holders has a releasable catch (6A) for engaging the link chain cable. A link (L1) of chain extending through the passage is caught automatically by the catch, when the chain is tensioned and released automatically when the chain is relaxed. Slots (9A,9B) are provided in the body whereby during chain tensioning a down line adjacent chain link (L2), threading the caught link, can swing relative to the caught link so as to form an angle of 27 or less. Clearance devices are formed on the body during chain tensioning.
