PURPOSE:To detect a mechanical failure or a deterioration of durability due to abnormal abrasion by providing such an arrangement that whether an amount of iron particles in oil is more than a predetermined value or not is discriminated in accordance with an electrical signal from a pair of electrodes for detecting the amount of iron particles attracted to a magnet. CONSTITUTION:When a mechanical mechanism has been worn, and produced iron particles are accumulated around an iron particle attracting magnet 5. When the abrasion further progresses so as to increase the amount of iron particles, the gap between two electrodes 6A, 6B in an abrasion detector 2 bonded to the magnet is filled with iron particles, resulting in electrical energization, and accordingly, the voltage of the input section of an A/D converter 8 in a control unit 1 is changed into an earth voltage. The A/D converter 8 changes over the voltage change into a digital signal which is then delivered to a computing device 9. The computing device 9 discriminates an amount of iron particles exceeding a predetermined value so as to operate an output circuit 10. Accordingly, a warning lamp 11 is turned on. Thereby, it is possible to know a failure or deterioration of a mechanical mechanism in the transmission.
