The penetration depth of impregnants in porous inorganic articles is determined by adding a material giving, by means of an indicator, a change in the colour of the impregnated article is added to the impregnant, if the impregnant does not already contain such a material, bringing, after impregnation, the part of the impregnated article on which the penetration depth of the impregnant is to be determined into contact with the indicator, and then measuring the distance between the surface into which the impregnant has penetrated and the part of the part, which has been impregnated and brought into contact with the indicator, of the impregnated article which has no colour change.
