Device for the transverse severing of a moving web, especially a web of plastic film having a tube which is arranged transversely to the web and is used to guide a transverse severing knife and a drive device for the transverse severing knife. The guiding tube is arranged at right angles to the running direction of the web in a stationary, although adjustable, fashion. The transverse severing cut can be made at right angles to the running direction of the moving web. The guiding tube is also designed to act as a conducting tube for the web. It has, in the region in which it comes into contact with the web, a knife exit slot which is arranged at right angles to the running direction of the web and the length of which is slightly greater than the width of the widest web. The transverse cutting knife, the length of which is at the very least equal to the width of the web, can be lowered in the guiding tube and made to emerge from the exit slot. The drive device for the transverse cutting knife is composed of a gear which controls the lowering movement and the knife-emerging movement and a servomotor which operates parallel to the axis of the guiding tube. <IMAGE>
