PURPOSE:To produce the titled layer having a uniform thickness and free from cracks by forming a thin film of a metal which is easily made amorphous on a substrate of a metal having higher heat conductivity than said metal in a metallurgically bonded state and by radiating pulsating laser beams on the thin film. CONSTITUTION:A thin film of Fe78Si9B13 for a magnetic material having about 40mum thickness is joined to the top of a copper substrate by hot isostatic press joining and the thickness of the thin film is regulated to 20mum by finishing. With respect to the relation between the shape of a part melted by radiating laser beams and conditions during the radiation, conditions which give a flat surface are estimated by varying distance from a focus and the energy of laser beams, and pulsating laser beams are radiated on the thin film under the estimated conditions. By this method, an amorphous metal layer having a uniform thickness can easily be formed on the surface of a substrate of a metal having high heat conductivity such as copper or silver, and since the layer has been metallurgically joined to the substrate, the resulting material is directly worked to a desired shape and can be used for various purposes.
