An apparatus (10) for changing the position of plates (11) which are supported on a transport device (12) running in a straight line, comprises essentially a housing (13), which can be moved back and forth along guides (14), and a plate driver (15) which can be raised and lowered perpendicularly with respect to the transport plane and can be rotated by predetermined angular amounts about an axis running perpendicularly with respect to the transport plane. The plate driver (15) can be a sucker or an electromagnet and is placed with frictional engagement on a plate (11) whose position is to be changed. While the entire apparatus (10) is being driven in the transport direction A, the plate driver (15) is raised and, at the same time, swivelled by means of a swivelling device (17) by a predetermined angular amount, the holding force between the plate driver (15) and the plate (11) is subsequently cancelled, and the plate (11) is laid down again, in a changed position, on the transport device (12). The entire apparatus (10) then returns to its starting position. <IMAGE>
