NEW MATERIAL:The optically active benzoic acid compound of formula (m is 2-12; n is 3-6; X is direct bond or O; * represents asymmetric carbon). EXAMPLE:4-(7'-Methylundecyl)benzoic acid. USE:Useful as an intermediate for ferroelectric liquid crystal compound. PREPARATION:The compound of formula can be produced e.g. by conventional etherification reaction or alkylation reaction comprising the reaction of corresponding 3-, 4-, 5- or 6-methylalkyl halide with 4-hydroxybenzoic acid or p-toluic acid.
