Use of lipopolysaccharides and/or their derivatives in combination with immunoglobulin preparations for antiinfectious treatment

Lipopolysaccharides which, in high doses, lead to irreversible states of shock also show, when used correctly, therapeutically utilisable effects. Immunoglobulin products have long been used for warding off infections. Animal experiments have shown, however, that the two groups of substances alone do not provide adequate protection against bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In contrast to this, combined use of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) or of lipid A or the corresponding derivatives with immunoglobulins leads to good results in the treatment of infections. Particularly good effects are achieved when an antibiotic is also used as third component.
