Substd. quinolone compds. having formula (I) and its pharm aceutically acceptable salts are prepd. by demethylation of (II). The rxn. opt. contains the following steps; (i) reacting (I) with isocyanate of formula R4NCO to convert -OCONHR4, (ii) oxidizing(I) to convert m=1 or 2 compds., (iii) converting (I) to its corresponding acid chloride and reacting with R4R5NH to produce R1= -CONR4R5 compds., etc.. In the formula, R1= -NR4R5CR4 and R5=H or C1-4 alkyl), -NR4CO; R2=H, C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 alkoxy, or cyano, is attached at 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, 7- or 8-; X=H.
