The invention relates to a method of determining the dose of and instant of exposure to radioactive and/or ionising radiation by means of thermoluminescence. A thermoluminescent material of which the glow curve has at least two thermoluminescence peaks is used. For determining the overall dose, the entire glow curve or the peak at the higher temperature is evaluated; for determining the instant of exposure, the relationship between the thermoluminescent intensities of the two peaks is found. The particularly preferred material for carrying out this method contains alpha -tridymite doped with metal ions, in particular copper ions. Furthermore, a method of preparing such an alpha -tridymite is described. <IMAGE>
