In a protective device for an exhaust catalytic converter of an internal combustion engine with a lambda control device, in which the output signal of a lambda probe arranged in the exhaust gas flow is analysed over a predetermined analysis time interval and compared with predetermined limit values, the output signal of the lambda probe is fed to an integrator and the integrator output signal used to actuate a signal device only when a predetermined limit value is exceeded. The lambda control device itself can advantageously serve as integrator.
