Adjustable motor-vehicle shock absorbers are provided with a cylinder (1) containing absorbing liquid, a piston rod (3) arranged axially displaceably therein, and an absorbing piston (4) which is fastened at the inner end thereof and divides the cylinder space into two working chamber halves (5, 6) and has fluid passage ducts (31) which generate absorbing force and the active cross-section of which is adjustable by a throttle valve body (32) and an electromagnetic drive with coil winding (46) which makes it possible to adjust the throttle resistance thereof, which are accommodated in the damping piston (4). In order to achieve an improved and above all more sensitive absorbing force adjustment, the throttle valve body (32) is under the influence on the one hand of the liquid differential pressure between the two working chamber halves (5, 6) and on the other hand of the return force brought about by the electromagnetic drive (46), there being provided between the throttle valve body (32) and the electromagnetic drive counteracting its hydraulic adjustment a hydraulic compensation arrangement in the form of an admission chamber (40) which increases the return force of the drive and is connected to the two working chamber halves (5, 6) via liquid line sections (41, 42, 43), in the line section (43) leading to the working chamber half (5) lying facing away from the liquid passage ducts (31) ...
