A reel brake device 100 of a magnetic tape cassette has a pair of braking pawls 105,106 for a supply reel and a take-up reel. The braking pawls are formed to allow resilient deformation in order to absorb kinematic energy exerted on the braking pawls by the tape reels as the reels are subject to rotational torque or lateral force, such that braking engagement can be maintained even when vibration exerting rotational force to the tape reels is applied. The pawls are resilently deformable at areas 107,108 of less thickness along their lengths and at their zones of joining 109,110 to the brake assembly. Means 119,120,120 (and 136,137 in Fig. 8) are provided to limit the extent of action of the pawls. <IMAGE>
