PURPOSE:To obtain the titled copolymer rubber excellent in powder properties in good yields, by copolymerizing ethylene with propylene in the presence of a specified catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A solid is obtained by contacting a metal oxide (i) (e.g., SiO2) which is an oxide of an element selected from the elements of Groups II-IV of the periodic table with a dihydrocarbylmagnesium (ii) (e.g., butylethylmagnesium) and a hydrocarboxy group-containing compound (iii) [e.g., Si(OC2H5)4]. A catalyst component (a) is obtained by contacting this solid with a halogen-containing alcohol (iv) (e.g., 2,2,2-trichloroethanol) and then with both an electron donor (v) (e.g., dibutyl phthalate) and a titanium compound (vi) (e.g., TiCl4). Ethylene is copolymerized with propylene at -80-150 deg.C in the presence of a catalyst comprising component (a) and an organoaluminum compound (b) to obtain the title copolymer rubber of an ethylene content of 15-90mol%.
