PURPOSE:To improve ionic mobility and to prevent the color deposition at the boundary face of an EC layer by constituting an electrolyte layer of an ECD of a thin film formed by plasma polymn. of a hydrocarbon compd. contg. an alkali metal and element having large electronegativity. CONSTITUTION:The high-polymer solid electrolyte layer 23 of the electrochromic display device (ECD) is the plasma-polymerized film of the hydrocarbon compd. contg. the alkali metal and the element having the large electronegativity. The element having the large electronegativity is F, O, N, Cl, or org. polar groups constituted by contg. the same, and is the element which electrostatically attracts alkali metal ions, for example, Li<+>, Na<+>, K<+>. The element which constitutes the group in the plasma-polymerized film is acceptable for the element having the large electronegativity. The electrochromic (EC) material layer 24 may be either solid or the material formed by dispersing the EC material into a resin at a high ratio. Said layer is preferably prepd. by the plasma polymn. in case of the former.
