PURPOSE:To provide an oxide for sealing, composed of Al2O3, SiO2 and CeO2 at amounts falling within specific respective ranges, and capable of preventing the generation of leak and maintaining color rendering characteristic in excellent state when used for the sealing of a metal halide lamp, etc. CONSTITUTION:An Al2O3-SiO2-CeO2 oxide for sealing containing 10-35wt% Al2O3, 15-50wt% SiO2 and 38-72wt% CeO2. The oxide exhibits remarkable bonding effect between ceramic and metal as well as ceramics with each other. Especially, it has high wettability to a material and gives extremely little crack generation caused by thermal stress, etc. Furthermore, it has high resistance to halogen vapor. Accordingly, taking a metal halide lamp as an example, there is little development of a phenomenon to lower the color rendering property of the lamp caused by the luminescence generated by the reaction of the metal halide with a part of the component during the lightening of the lamp. It is extremely useful for the sealing of a high-pressure sodium lamp and a metal halide lamp, etc.
