PURPOSE:To exactly set a cylinder in the horizontal direction without rotating it unnecessarily and excessively, by providing a rotational position detecting means of a rotatable cylinder in which an inclined part has been provided on the upper end face. CONSTITUTION:An automatic inclination adjusting sample base 21 is provided with a base 3 which has been attached so as to be turnable, a cylinder 24, a cylinder 25 which has been wound and installed so as to be freely turnable to a notched recess of the upper part of its outside periphery, sliding members 26, 27 whose lower ends contact inclined end faces 24a, 25a of the upper end faces of the cylinders 24, 25, a supporting plate 28 for supporting them, a sample base 29 which has been held by the plate 28, and motors 31, 32 for driving to rotate the cylinders 24, 25. One position sensor 47a detects the center (horizontal) position of a rotatable angle range and generates an L signal, when a light shielding plate 45 has rotated together with the cylinder 24, and when it rotates by + or -90 deg. from this position, an H signal is generated. The other position sensor 47b generates an H signal at the horizontal position. In accordance with output signals of the sensors 47a, 47b, the motor 31 rotates the cylinder in the positive or negative direction and sets the cylinder 24 to the horizontal position.
