PURPOSE:To remove missing in size between an original and paper by coloring the press surface of an original cover, optically detecting the color of the press surface and the surface of the original and discriminating the edge part of the original to detect the size. CONSTITUTION:An original is set up on an original platen 2 and light is irradiated from a copying light source 12 to the original, reflected by reflecting mirrors 17-31 to form a latent image on a photosensitive drum 3. A color information reading light source 16 is arranged and a spot reader is also arranged adjacently to the light source 16. Light from the light source 16 is irradiated to the press surface painted with sky blue on the original cover 42 and its reflected light is made incident upon the reader. The spot reader transmits light with a specific wavelength and reflects light having wavelength other than the specific one to detect the ratio of the transmitted light to the reflected light on the press surface of the original cover 42 and the original surface respectively, discriminate the edge part of the original and detect the original size. Since the press surface of the original cover is colored, missing in size between the original and paper is removed and an excellent image can be formed.
