PURPOSE:To form a gap between sheet papers not only at a central portion of a bill but also at both side portions thereof, by providing a gap enlarging means adapted to be moved sideward from a separating claw means to enlarge the gap. CONSTITUTION:The tip of separating claws 4 and 5 is inserted into bills 2 and is obliquely lifted to lift the bills on the upper side of the separating claws 4 and 5. A predetermined number of bills over the stacked bills 2 are separated from the stacked bills 2, and a gap 6 is formed below the separated bills. Under this condition, mount arms 29 are rocked to insert gap enlarging rollers 28 into the gap 6. Thereafter, when a screw 30 is rotated, the gap enlarging rollers 28 are guided by a guide 31 to be moved toward both sides of the bills 2. When the gap enlarging rollers 28 reach a predetermined position, the rotation of the screw 30 is stopped. Accordingly, even if the bills 2 have a fold or the like, the gap is formed generally between the fills 2.
