PURPOSE:To detect whether or not a scanning mechanism section is operated normally by piecing a hole to the belt of the scanning mechanism section and measuring the time interval when the holes pass a photosensor. CONSTITUTION:The scanning mechanism section consists of a pulse motor 10 and rollers 30, 31, 32, 33 driven by the pulse motor 10 via belts 20, 21. When a control section 50 starts the pulse motor 10, the belt is driven and a phototransistor (TR) 40 is turned on at every time a hole 22 provided to the belt 20 comes to the photosensor comprised of the TR 40 and a light emitting diode 41. When a microcomputer 51 detects the turning-on, the output of a counter 52 at that time is stored, and the difference between the contents of the counter 52 at this time and the counter 52 at the preceding time is calculated when the hole 22 passes by the photosensor. When the difference is within a prescribed range, the control section 50 discriminates that the pulse motor 10 is driven normally and when not a fault display is given to a display section 60.
