The steering control of dirigibles in slow flight is brought about in particular by acting on the propulsive forces from two propulsion engine units situated on either side of the mid plane. For a variety of reasons these two units are placed at the rear of the apparatus, on either side of a stiffening keel. The invention consists in making these two units symmetrically orientable around vertical axes between a divergent downstream position for which the differences in propulsive forces have no steering effect, and a convergent downstream position for which these differences have a strong steering effect. The first position is chosen for flight on one engine, the second for approaching the ground on two engines, and an intermediate position for normal flight. <IMAGE>
