PURPOSE:To reduce the number of thyristors in a DC power source by composing a first power converter of the thyristors of the number responsive to the number of phases of a transformer, and composing a second power converter of switches and a plurality of thyristors to improve the utility rate of the transformer. CONSTITUTION:A gate signal is applied to the thyristors U-Z of a thyristor bridge 2 by a gate controller in the state that a switch 6a is opened and a switch 6b is closed, forward-converted, and a DC current is supplied to a load 4. When the DC current is reduced, the thyristors U-W are turned OFF, and a gate signal is applied to thyristors U'-W' to be reversely converted. After the DC current becomes zero, the switch 6a is closed, the switch 6b is opened, the gate signal is applied to the thyristors U'-W', X-Z to be forward- converted, and a current to the load 4 is inverted.
