The stacker crane contains travelling gear (7), from which a lifting device (8) hangs down. Arranged at the bottom end of the lifting device (8) is a gripping appliance (15) which is designed for taking hold of sheet-like objects (1). This gripping appliance (15) has a carrying body which is directly attached to the lifting device (8), gripping devices (25) being arranged on both sides of this carrying body. The respective gripping device (25) is provided with grippers (16) for reaching under objects (1). The gripping appliance (15) is constructed in such a way that the distance of the gripping devices (25) from the carrying body and/or the length of the respective gripping device (25) can be changed. The gripping appliance of a stacker crane constructed in this way can also be adapted in a preprogrammed manner to the size of the object to be manipulated in each case. <IMAGE>
