A device for repelling small mammals, such as martens, which damage vehicle components in the engine compartment of a motor vehicle is described which consists in an electrically conductive element which is insulated electrically with respect to the earth being placed under the vehicle in the region of the engine compartment, and the elements and the vehicle or the elements and the earth being provided with a voltage source. When the element and the vehicle, or the element and the earth are touched at the same time, the small mammal receives an electric shock and is therefore scared away.
