In the case of a process and an apparatus for producing ceramic tiles, a strand of clay is continuously issued in a flat-lying form from the die ring of a ceramic extruder and divided up into individual strands by means of a cutting-off means. Each individual strand is separated from the others, increasing the spacing between them, by acceleration on a accelerator conveyor and is brought by means of a transfer station at right angles to the previous direction of conveyance into the region of a punching station. During the transfer operation of the individual strand from the accelerator conveyor into the punching station, the individual strand is initially set down on bearing bars arranged in the transfer station and, during the next transfer operation, is pushed off the bearing bars by means of transfer bars movable between the bearing bars and is pushed into the punching station. The tiles in the punching station and already punched out from another individual strand are pushed out of the punching station by the individual strand being pushed in and are passed onto a conveying-away belt for transporting away. In the punching station, the ceramic tiles are punched out from the individual strand, no longer producing any excess material.
