In order to prevent losses of milk, which frequently amount to many hundreds of litres, as the milk is conveyed, due to the fact that someone has forgotten to close an open outflow tap (15) on a milk-cooling vat (9), a monitoring and warning system is provided. The said system at least comprises at least one sensor (25) which reacts to contact with milk and an electronic control and monitoring unit (21) which is arranged downstream and in which an output stage (41) can be triggered to indicate that milk is being conveyed and/or to close the corresponding outflow taps (15), in dependence on the signal measured by the sensor (25) (Fig. 2). <IMAGE>
