The solar collector comprises a radiation absorbing surface (2) and pipes (4) carrying a heat transfer fluid. A transparent cover (5) is spaced from the absorbing surface, a convection and heat radiation suppressing structure (6) occupying at least part of the space between the absorbing surface and the transparent cover. - The convection and heat radiation suppressing structure comprises two or more thin, wrinkled transparent foils (7) placed on top of each other.
