PURPOSE:To obtain an optical material which is highly resistant to heat, chemicals, solvents and water, is substantially free from shrinkage, has excellent dimensional stability and formability and has substantially no double refractions by consisting said material of a polymer in which a specific cyclic monomer component has specific structure. CONSTITUTION:The polymer constituting the optical material consists of the monomer component which is expressed by formula 1 and which has mainly the structure expressed by formula 2. The preferable form of the monomer is exemplified by a copolymer consisting of alpha-olefin and the cyclic olefin except formula 1 together with the monomer component expressed by formula 1. Said polymer is produced by polymn. using a Ziegler catalyst or preferably vanadium Ziegler catalyst. The polymer is chemically stable, is highly resistant to water and chemicals such as alkalis and acids and is highly resistant to solvents, heat and weather as well. The molar ratio of the specific monomr component/ ethylene is in a 5/95-95/5 range. The polymer having the mol.wt. in a 0.1-0.20dl/g range of intrinsic viscosity (eta) measured in 125 deg.C decalin or <=5% degree of crystallinity (X-ray diffraction method) is adequate in the case of using the polymer for the optical material. |
