The present invention relates to a method of identifying a fingerprint, the device for implementing this method and the use of this method. This method consists in the acquisition of the image of a fingerprint by an optical method, in automatic recognition of a defined number of characteristic points of this image and in the comparison of these characteristic points with those of previously acquired images. In order to carry out these operations, a key for this image is calculated, which is specific to the fingerprint, this key being defined on the basis of the number of characteristic points selected as being representative of the image of the fingerprint. This method is used in checking the identity of an individual by comparison of his fingerprint with that on his identity card.
