PURPOSE:To make it possible to perform the judgement of a color even if the distance between a sensor and objective matter varies to a certain degree, by respectively comparing at least a plurality of items of the outputs of a main sensor and a sub-sensor with the value preliminarily stored in a memory. CONSTITUTION:A sensor 4 is constituted of a triangular factorization type main sensor and a sub-sensor 14 formed of a light-receiving element sensitive to visible light. At first, a white surface is placed at the position of a colorimetry object 1 and the tristimulus values and the output of the sub-sensor 14, when the distance (l) between the sensor 4 and the white surface is moved in a proper range while the white surface is illuminated by a fluorescent lamp 3, are taken in a calculator and, in the same way, the output of the sub-sensor 4, when an arbitrary color material was viewed, is also calculated while the distance (l) is changed to be stored in the calculator. With respect to the object 1, the tristimulus values detected by the sensor 13, the output of the sub-sensor 4 and the ratio of the output of the sub-sensor 14 and a red component X are set as the items in the judgement of a color and at least a plurality of items are compared with the value stored in memory by presetting a threshold value to make it possible to perform the judgement of a color.
