PURPOSE:To secure the secret protection of picture information by providing enciphering/decoding control means and enciphering and informing beforehand the parameters (transmission speed, compression method to be used, etc.) which are necessitated by both transmission and reception sides in communication. CONSTITUTION:A main control part 5 of transmitting side facsimile equipment enciphers the parameters (transmission speed, compression method to be used, etc.) beforehand through an enciphering/decoding control part 6, ad transmits them to reception side facsimile equipment through a communication control part 7. The reception side facsimile equipment has the same constitution as the transmission side facsimile equipment, and the control part decodes the parameters received through the control part 6, and the control part 5 recognizes the communication parameters. Next the transmission of transmitting original is performed through transmitter/receiver 1, picture signal scanning part 2, encoding part 3, compression method control part 4, and control part 7. Thus it is possible to keep the confidentiality of communication by enciphering the parameters necessitated by both transmission and reception for the communication using control part 6 beforehand, and informing them in advance.
