A feedback system for controlling the speed of a fluid motor (10), preferably an air motor, includes an optical-signal transmitter (44), an optical-signal receiver (46), and an optically sensitive marker (30,36) on the motor output shaft (12). The marker selectively couples the optical- signal transmitter to the optical- signal receiver and converted into an electrical signal at 58 indicative of motor speed. This signal is compared with a desired speed signal set by control 68 in the circuit 62 and supplied converter (84) which converts the signal to a fluid signal. A processor (104,112) is coupled to the converter for processing the fluid signal to provide a processed fluid signal which is coupled to the input of the fluid motor to control it.
