PURPOSE:To obtain a highly stereoregular olefin polymer in high yields, by contacting an olefin with a catalyst comprising a specified solid catalyst component, an organoaluminum compound and a sulfone. CONSTITUTION:An olefin is polymerized by contact with a catalyst comprising a solid component (A) having a magnesium halide and a titanium halide as components, an organoaluminum compound (B) and a sulfone (C). As the magnesium halide, magnesium chloride, especially anhydrous magnesium chloride is preferable. As the titanium halide, titanium trichloride is particularly desirable. Examples of the sulfones include dimethyl sulfone and phenyl cyclohexyl sulfone. Said olefin polymerization can be suitably applied to the homopolymerization of ethylene, propylene or butene or the copolymerization of a combination of these monomers.
