PURPOSE:To produce a polyamide and/or a polyamic acid of a high degree of polymerization, by reacting a polyalcohol with a diisocyanate in the presence of an alkali metal salt of an imide. CONSTITUTION:A polyamide and/or a polyamic acid having repeating units of formula V are produced by reacting a polycarboxylic acid of formula I with a diisocyanate of formula II in the presence of alkali metal salts of imides of formulas III and/or IV. In the above formulae, R<1> is null or a bi--tetravalent organic group, R<2> and R<3> are each a bivalent organic group, R<4> and R<5> are each a trivalent organic group, M is an alkali metal, X is -0- or a group of formula VI or VII (wherein R<6> is a group reactive with neither a COOH group nor an NCO group), Y is a bond, -0-, a group of formula VIII, IX or the like and n is 2-4. The use of the alkali metal salt of the amide as a catalyst permits the production of a high-polymerization degree polyamide or polyamic acid which can not be obtained by using a conventional catalyst.
