PURPOSE:To separate novel 6 kinds of polysaccharides having hypoglycemic and antiarteriosclerotic activities, by extracting the stalk of a gramineous plant such as maize, separating a saccharane mixture e.g. by dialysis, and fractionating the mixture. CONSTITUTION:The stalk of maize or its relative plant belonging to gramineous family is squeezed or extracted with water and/or an aqueous solvent (e.g. acetone) to obtain juice or extract, or the black molasses of the plant is subjected to dialysis or ultrafiltration to obtain a saccharane mixture, which is subjected to the fractionaltion treatment to obtain the 6 kinds of novel polysaccharides having the following molecular weight. saccharane A, 9.6X10<5>: saccharane B, >=1.0X10<7>: saccharane C, 2.3X10<6>: saccharane D, 2.6X10<3>: saccharane E, 3.8X10<4>: and saccharane F, 2.3X10<3>. The novel polysaccharides have hypoglycemic and antiarteriosclerotic activities. Dose: 50-500mg of the saccharanes daily as a drug composition. |
