PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance useful as an amber-type compound perfumery, in high yield, by oxidizing sclareol in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst, reducing the product, and dehydrating in the presence of a solid acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Sclareol is dissolved usually in a mixture of acetic acid, water and dichloroethane. KMnO4 is added bit by bit to the solution in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst (e.g. tetrabutyl ammonium bromide) usually at 20-40 deg.C to effect the oxidation of sclareol. The oxidized product is successively saponified and lactonated by conventional process to obtain a simple norambrenolide. The norambrenolide is reduced in a solvent such as THF by conventional method, and the resultant 2-hydroxy-2,5,5,9-tetramethyldecalylethylol is subjected to the dehydration reaction in the presence of a preliminarily prepared solid acid catalyst, usually at 20-50 deg.C to obtain the objective l-ambrox. |
