<p>Penicillins (I) are produced by fermentation by aerobic cultivation of a Penicillium micro-organism in a nutrient medium contg. the usual nutrients and side chain precursor, but with EtOH as the major source of C and chemical energy. Commercial EtOH is a pure material, so that the fermentation medium contains fewer impurities and so recovery of good purity (I) is easier. The EtOH is easily handled because of its low viscosity and it is easily sterilised.</p> |
