NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I [X is H, lower alkyl or halogen; n is 0, 1 or 2; R is a group of formula II (R<1> is lower alkyl), etc.]. EXAMPLE:N,N'-Diethyl-N'-ethoxyoxalylbenzamidine. USE:An agricultural and horticultural germicide, capable of exhibiting remarkable effect on powdery mildew of various crops in a small amount of chemical, remarkable controlling effect on germs resistant to thiophanate-methyl, and further controlling effect on pathogenic germs of gray mold, blast, etc. with very low phytotoxicity to crops and toxicity to humans and animals. PREPARATION:A benzamidine is reacted with an alkoxyoxalyl chloride according to the reaction formula to give a compound of formula III. The reaction is carried out in the presence of triethylamine in an organic solvent, e.g. ethyl ether, at 0-40 deg.C.
