NEW MATERIAL:A diynediol based compound expressed by formula I (R1-R10 are H or lower alkyl, provided that at least one of R1-R5 and R6-R10 is lower alkyl). EXAMPLE:1,1,6,6-Tetra(2,4-dimethylphenyl)-2,4-diyne-1,6-diol. USE:An alcohol separating agent capable of forming alcohol complex compounds having good stability from various alcoholic solutions. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula II is reacted with acetylene in liquid ammonia in the presence of sodium amide to give a compound expressed by formula III, which is then kept in the presence of cuprous chloride catalyst and a base in an inert solvent under an oxygen or air stream to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I .
