PURPOSE:To obtain a surfactant having excellent capacity, by sulfonating a mixture consisting of a thermally cracked oil fraction based on hydrocarbon with a b.p. in a specific range, a thermally cracked byproduct oil fraction, a reforming oil fraction and an aromatic fraction or aromatic hydrocarbon. CONSTITUTION:A reaction product, which is obtained by treating a mixture consisting of 20-95wt% of (A) a thermally cracked oil fraction of heavy residual oil based on hydrocarbon with a b.p. of 120-290 deg.C and 80-5wt% of (B) a fraction with a b.p. of 150-250 deg.C selected from a group consisting of (a) a thermally cracked by product oil fraction obtained by the thermal cracking of petroleum light oil at 750-850 deg.C, (b) a reforming oil fraction obtained by the catalytic reforming of petroleum light oil with a b.p. of 50-250 deg.C and (c) an aromatic fraction separated and obtained from oil fractions (a), (b) being a stock material or 80-5wt% of (C) aromatic hydrocarbon with a b.p. of below 150 deg.C having no aliphatic double bond at a reaction temp. of 30-330 deg.C in the presence of an acid catalyst in a liquid phase, is sulfonated under a sulfonation condition and neutralized.
