A transport mechanism is disclosed for transporting a document (16) around a track (10) in a groove (12). A boundary wall in the form of a continuous wall (20) or an array of guide cylinders (52) is provided on the outside of a corner around which the track passes. A breaking cylinder (30) which is rotated with the same surface velocity as the document (16) constricts the document (16) against the boundary (20,52) and opens out any longitudinal folds (22) therein to reduce the mechanical strength which they cause in the document (16). A drive mechanism (28,38) then flattens the document (16) against the boundary (20,52) and renders the document (16) flexible for the continuation of its transportation around the curged track (10). Dog-ears (56) on the leading edge (57) of a document (16) are conditional to prevent their causing impediment to further document transportation either by being folded back against the document (16) or by being folded back into the plane of the document (16).
