PURPOSE:To obtain an ester without causing trouble such as corrosion of reactor, residual organic chlorine compound in product, etc., by adding an alkali substance to a carboxylic acid and an alcohol, then a metallic chloride as a catalyst to them, and reacting the carboxylic acid with the alcohol. CONSTITUTION:In obtaining an ester from a carboxylic acid and an alcohol, an alkali substance (preferably hydroxide or carbonate of K of Na) is added to them, they are stirred for 15-30min, a metallic oxide shown by the formula MCln (M is Sn, Ti, or Zn; n is 2, 3, 4), and the reaction is performed at 190-220 deg.C. The amount of the metallic chloride used is 0.05-5mol% (preferably 0.1-1mol%) based on the carboxylic acid, and the amount of the alkali substance used is preferably 0.8-1.2 equivalent ratio based on the metallic chloride. This method is effective for producing a carboxylic acid ester of polyhydric alcohol which is relatively difficult in esterification. |
