In the currently known methods of pulse code modulation, a pseudo-ternary code is used for known reasons. In this process, sine-squared or sine-half-wave pulses, which mark one characteristic state, are provided during the transmission. The other characteristic state is zero. One disadvantage of this coding is that a wide frequency band is required and that a transmission via carrier frequency systems is not possible. These defects are avoided in the invention by the fact that a binary code which is formed from the half-waves or periods of a sinusoidal alternating current with the characteristic states of large and small amplitude values is formed, is provided for the coding and is sent in an uninterrupted sequence of positive and negative half-waves. In this arrangement, the transmission can occur in time-division multiplex or frequency-division multiplex.
